Opening Doors' - Maria House & Theresa Shelter

About: Opening Doors' humble beginnings started with compassion for a homeless woman who was found on a park bench in Jackson Park with her dog. The Dubuque Humane Society took the dog, but there was no place for the woman to go. Now over 12 years later, Opening Doors operates two programs for homeless women, alone or with children - Maria House and Teresa Shelter. We are so proud of the more than 2,000 women and children that have gone through our doorways and into a future filled with the promise of a brighter tomorrow.

What Amirage Does: When a woman at the Maria House or Theresa Shelter is at the point in her life where she is ready to start job interviews, we are "opening doors" to give them a free makeover. This includes haircolors, haircuts, facial waxing, cosmetic lessons and hair styling lessons that bring their natural beauty shinning out! Being in the beauty industry, we know how big of an inpact your look can sometimes make during job interviews, and even more, how outter appearance can change a womens self-confidence in how she views herself. We feel honored to give these women a look that makes them feel proud of who they are and how they look!

Images and Information - Founded 1992

Images & Information is a style show promoting the awareness of breast cancer, celebrating survivorship and education on the importance of early detection. The first event was held in 1993 and focused on using breast cancer survivors as models and greeters. Amirage Salon proudly supports Images and Information by providing free hair styles and cosmetic applications before and during the fashion show event. In 2002, the focus broadened to become a charitable organization by donating proceeds to breast cancer patients and survivors. Due to the need in our community, this event has continued to grow and so have the donation requests. In 2010, the Images & Information committee (including one of our own, Carole Nauman, Co-Owner of Amirage / Licensed Cosmetologist / Hair Loss Specialist) decided to start an endowment fund through the Community Foundation of Greater Dubuque. This gives another option to donate to breast cancer survivors and insures the continuation of financial help to future breast cancer survivors.
